HostPapa Hosting Review

HostPapa is a Canadian hosting company from outside of Toronto. They’ve been around since 2006 and are a leading green hosting company, offering green hosting space at a fraction of the cost of other green competitors.

Prices starting at $3.95/Month

Shared hosting

HostPapa actually has a lower entry price than more of their competitors, with their Starter plan going for just $1.95 p/mo. And like their competitors, they advertise their service as scalable and unlimited. Specifically, they offer unlimited disk space, bandwidth and transfers, unlimited domain hosting, and unlimited hosting space (except MySQL).

However what they mean by ‘unlimited’ is that they don’t actively cap any of these; however, if you are using what they feel is too much of any of these shared resources, then you will be penalized.

Each shared hosting account includes a website builder (improved version for more expensive plans) cPanel control, FTP accounts, and come with a 30 day money back guarantee. Additional plans buy you more speed and better performance, SSL, backups, SiteLock, CDN, and better servers, and CSS website editing.

VPS hosting

HostPapa also has VPS hosting, starting at $9.99 for the first month but then jumping up to $49.99. That gets you 4 cores, 1.5GB RAM, 50GB storage, unlimited bandwidth, and full VPS management via cPanel and WHM. You can buy more RAM, SSD drives, storage, backups, and dedicated IP addresses all as add-ons.

More expensive plans will get you more cores, RAM and storage. They offer both Windows  and Linux hosting options.

MySQL

HostPapa offers both MySQL 5 as well as PostgreSQL databases in unlimited numbers (although from reviewing their unlimited policy it’s clear that there is a limit, they just don’t really have a number for it).

These are accessed with phpMyAdmin and phpPgAdmin. However, this only applies to their VPS hosting. For their shared hosting options, only MySQL and phpMyAdmin are available.

They do have some support, but their live support online is extremely slow and their knowledge centre, while extensive, is a mishmash of French and English.

Conclusion

HostPapa is a great hosting company if you’re a beginner webmaster or developer. They’ll let you get up and running pretty fast and at low cost. However, for the more experienced website developers, HostPapa’s offering is simply not extensive enough to choose them.
